walnuts and bananas beat advertised 'health' food

Some interesting health-related news today. Business as usual, really, in so far as the best foods don't advertise. In a (wal)nutshell, the message is - the best use for your multi-mineral and vitamin tablets is probably added to a compost heap, and walnuts, in moderation, are very healthy:

Right now, they’re on sale on Amazon for $55.94 for four bottles of 50 gummies. Since you need to take two One A Day Multivitamins a day (two a day?), you’d need to spend $200+ per year just on the multivitamin itself.

 To put that into perspective, that's 200 kilograms of bananas.

 What’s more, a diet rich in walnuts not only improves cholesterol profile but may reduce an individual’s risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and may also be protective against colorectal cancer.

 In the present study, researchers from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and Loma Linda University also showed positive effects of daily consumption of walnut kernels on elderly people’s health, saying eating handful each day can delay health concerns associated with aging.

 According to the researchers, snacking on walnuts every day is markedly advantageous in alleviating artery-clogging cholesterol, with no adverse effect on body weight among older adults.

 “The preliminary results of the Walnuts and Healthy Ageing (WAHA) study demonstrates that daily consumption of walnuts for one year by a sizeable cohort of ageing free-living persons has no adverse effects on body weight,” said lead investigator Emilio Ros, Director of the Lipid Clinic, Endocrinology & Nutrition Service at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona in Spain.

  3. We shop at Aldi. It's a no frills grocery. That keeps the prices down. I even see people driving cars that cost %40,000 shopping there. I guess they have to so that they can pay for the car... :)

  4. #bargain groceries! I researched Aldi - it is the US equivalent of Lidl, apparently. I called in Lidl on my return from allotments, needing only 2 things (I thought!) and came away with a box full of quality groceries, mostly half the price of their competition ...
