Heavy Metal Music soothes the savage breast

Music soothes the troubled breast, in fact:

On BBC Radio 3's week of programs delving into music and the mind, there was talk of research into the measurable physiological effects of music, which is more reliable than questionnaires, which tend to suffer from assumptions!

They sounded surprised that Heavy Metal music does not dispose listeners to violence. On the contrary it seems to calm them.

This doesn't surprise me. It reminds me of the notoriously bad advice that Jo Public gives to anyone in a low mood - to put on 'The Sound of Music' (or similar) and cheer up. It's as effective as painting a black hole with brilliant white emulsion - worse than nothing.

Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb does the trick for me - especially if I want to write and feel stuck. I suspect the heavy metal works for fans of such for the very same reason - it validates the feelings you have.
